Where can I get Yellow Fever Vaccination in Bangalore (Bengaluru) ?

I have gotten a few queries regarding Yellow Fever Vaccination Center in Bangalore. Since this is not mentioned in the list of government centers in India that appears on many websites, I am posting the details here
Bengaluru (Kamataka State, India):
Public Health Institute (Opposite: S.J.Polytechnique college),
Near Atria Hotel/ K.R Circle, Bangalore-560001, Kamataka state, India.
Telephone Number from India: 080-22210248 (very near to Maharani College).
Days: Wednesday or next working day, if it is a Government Holiday.
Note:
(1) At Public Health Institute in Bengaluru, you need to register your name at least a day or two
advance by phone.
(2) Please carry your (i) Original passport (as the passport number is to be entered in the yellow card
and register).
(ii) One 2 ml Disposable Syringe (No. 24 gauze).
(iii) Yellow fever booklet (if you have got from recognized travel agency if not, will be provided at
PHI.
(iv) Fees ofRs. 400-00 (Rupees Four hundred) only, for which a receipt will be issued.
(v) Vaccination will be given only for a group of 10 people as it contains 10 doses or else it is not
possible for them to open a vial for one or two persons.

Source

Comment: In my opinion the main problems are two fold. It is inconvenient since the center is open only once a week. No one answers the phone usually, so you are never really sure if you would actually be able to get the injection if you are coming from a far off place.
The use of multi-dose vial, and the use of a generic non standard Yellow Fever vaccine are other issues that you need to be aware of.
Unfortunately, I am not aware of any private centers doing the same in Bengaluru.
Any feedback from people taking the vaccination at this (or any other center) would be appreciated

  1. I belong to Diu (U.T.) where 90% of our community travel abroad in Merchant Navy who require Yellow fever, but our administration couldn't provide vaccine in Govt Health department and people has to vaccinate themself from Mumbai or other places with great trouble, its my request if u can start a private centre or any other way of vaccination in Diu region.

    1. Now Yellow fever vaccine is available in manipal banaglore. There 500 doses available. Contact manipal ASP.

    2. Is Manipal Hospital authorized to give Yellow Fever vaccination and valoid vaccination certificate

  2. That is a great suggestion Pradeep.
While we do not yet have a center in Diu, we could arrange for vaccinations in any city in the country if a large number of people want to take the same simultaneously.
All you need to do is talk to us, and make the payment in our Bank Account, and our trained employees would be happy to come over to Diu (or anywhere else) and do the vaccination,

  4. Dear Dr Gupta,

This is urgent. I need to travel to Nigeria on Business soon. I live in Bangalore. And Manipal Hospitals say they give Yellow fever vaccination. Where as my office says that it may not be recognized, I need to get the vaccine only at the Govt centre. But the appointments are just not available at the govt. centre. Please could you tell me where I can check if Manipal is authorised?

    Regards,
    Neeti

    1. To the best of my knowledge Manipal Hospital does not possess the requisite qualification.
However, I cannot be sure of this. Ask them if they are authorized to provide the WHO International certificate of Vaccination.
If not, I would urge you to travel to Delhi and take the vaccination at our center. It is hardly a day's trip.
If that is not feasible, we can consider sending someone across, but it becomes fairly expensive to do this for one person.

    2. Hello Dr. Gupta,

I'm also from Bangalore. Myself and my friend also in the need of Yellow fever vaccination. If you can send someone across here and assume neeti, myself and my friend can take the injection from you then how much will cost.

Other wise we can gather a team of peoples if possible.

    1. I agree that this may be a solution for many countries like Kenya.
However some of the embassies refuse to issue a VISA without the vaccination, and that can be a problem for some travelers (Uganda for example)
Hopefully we will get a few doses after 15th July

    2. Hi Raem
Your option that one can get the vaccine done at the destination airport in case YFV not available and if one can get a "non availability certificate from port trust" is really an excellent solution as people are getting extremely tensed due to non availability of vaccine throughout India.
      Please clarify
      1. Is this solution applicable to Tanzania?
      2. How and from where to get a "non availability certificate from port trust"?

    1. I feel that getting a Duplicate Certificate may be difficult, you can try asking the center where you got the vaccination done though.
The easy way would be to take the vaccine again, no side-effects likely.

  49. There is no vaccine in Bangalore, and there hasn't been any for the past 4 months. The people at the Public Health institute are too afraid to give you a "non-availability' certificate. Academics, business people and others are having to cancel important work trips to Africa and S. America because Indian inefficiency (yet again) means no vaccine, no communication with airport officials about this and the terrible fear that one is going to be fined or "quarantined" when we return to India. Indian officials in the airport simply say... "not our problem".. yes that is exactly why India is going down the tubes

Will such a thing happen in China? Of course not..

  50. Getting that Yellow Fever Jab in Bangalore

In preparation for my trip to East Africa, I realised it was mandatory for all travelers going there (regardless of whether you're headed to mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar) to get a yellow fever vaccination and certificate. They will ask to see your certificate at your port of entry. If you don't have it, you will be directed to the inoculation room at the airport before you can clear immigration.

There was hardly any information online about getting the shot in Bangalore. So here’s me doing my good deed for all those trawling for information about “yellow fever vaccination in Bangalore” on the internet.

While some private hospitals (like Manipal) do administer the vaccine (I’m not sure how much they charge for this), a certificate from them is not recognized.

The only place that can issue that all-important certificate (and administer the vaccine at a subsidized rate of Rs 260) is the Public Health Institute.

Government organisation. And we all know how any Indian government institute is going to be. The website will tell you that the vaccines are given only every Wednesday – for which you need to make an appointment over the telephone beforehand.

So I tried calling – but each time, either nobody would pick up (big surprise there?) or even if somebody did, they’d say all the appointments were “full” (only 10 appointments are given for each Wednesday) and to call back later.

That’s when a doctor neighbour who’d gone through the rigmarole himself gave me this invaluable piece of advice on how to go about it.

    1. Go to the Public Health Institute in person first thing Monday morning (9 AM) along with your passport.
    2. Wait in queue there (there were about three people already waiting when I reached).
    3. When the guy in charge finally shows up (around 10:30 AM), he’ll open his register and ask each person when their date of travel is. This is where you FIB. If your date of travel is even 10 days away, he’ll ask you to come back the next week. So tell him your date of travel is about a week away – he will just have to give you the appointment (and they don’t ask to see your tickets!)
    4. The guy will enter your name and passport number in the register and give you the date and time of your vaccination appointment.
    5. On Wednesday, show up well in time with your passport and two disposable syringes. They have their own syringes as well – a lot of people did not have their own syringes – but do you really want to risk it?
    6. Once the guy in charge has arrived, he’ll cross-check your name and appointment in his register and give you a form and the yellow fever booklet to fill in before sending you to another office to pay Rs 260 (take exact change to save time).
    7. With the payment receipt in hand, you will now have to wait your turn as the doctors call out each name in the order entered in the register.
    8. The shot is a trifle painful (intra-muscular), but it’s valid for ten years, so that’s a blessing.
    9. The doctors will sign and seal your certificate/booklet and you’re free to go.

Would this be accepted at the Public Health Institute or would they insist on the original?

    Replies
    1. Most Government Centers make it mandatory to have the original passport plus the ticket/ visa for YF vaccine,
You can call and confirm this before going for the vaccination.
In private centers, even a xerox of the Passport usually suffices,

  56. >>Part 1 of 2<<

    Hello everyone,

So I got my vaccine done after a little bit of drama, yesterday at the Public Health Institute, Bangalore. Thought I'd come back and share it with everyone in case it helps.

GENERAL: Yes, the vaccine is finally available now but apparently since they are importing it from private source, the price is now Rs. 400/- [Cash only, no card based system available at all]

    BOOKING THE APPOINTMENT:
Tried calling the Health Institute on my own but I don't speak Kannada cos I'm not from the south and had moved here a year back. When I couldn't speak their language, the person on the phone asked where I'm from - any place other than Karnataka = Click! Hung up saying go to your home town and get it done there (I think this was because of the big shortage and the huge numbers of people actually traveling to other states to try and get the vaccine done)
Asked a friend to call up and speak in Kannada (this was on Monday morning at 10 a.m.) - all went well. They asked my name, passport number, company I'm working at and gave me the exact timing of 11:15 saying my appointment is booked and to come by at least 11 a.m. to make payments. Felt a sigh of relief.... (but don't stop here > keep reading as the story changes)

    GETTING THERE:
Wednesday morning >> Since I drove there, I just punched in the name Public Health Institute and since I drove from Hosur Road, Google Maps somehow got me there and remarkably in more or less the time it estimated (about an hour) and in heavy morning traffic - They said to get there by 11 a.m. but I left from home at 8:30 and got there by 9:30-9:45.
The roads to get there is really windy and includes circling around weird roundabouts so if you're not sure or have trouble reading maps, leave earlier.
You are allowed to park inside the premises thankfully - someone should show you the way to go in and parallel park somewhere deep in.

THERE: So here's the story. Got there beaming with smile. It's a typical old government style, barely any computer, old noisy khaitan-fan spinning, ledger-based typical setup. Got there and waited for the person to show up. Ask any one there where the yellow fever vaccine location is and they'll tell you.
Got there early and there were like 20 people waiting there already.
Once the guy got in, promptly stood in line and he'll ask all the people who have registered already to only come first (in no particular order) so I managed to get to the front of the line despite coming a little later.
    (end of part 1)

He pulls out his ollldd registARRR book and lo and behold said, nope, my name is not even there. There were other people who said they had called and there name was not there as well so be warned. Tried explaining that I was very specifically told to come at this time. He was very impatient initially and told me to step out and wait while he finished everyone else. Waited and finally snuck in again. Again, same thing - "where's your name? No name, no needle! Scram!"
Begged him a little. Then he looked at my passport (I had brought a copy cos I didnt have it with me) -
    "No XEROX COPY! SCRAM!"
......Saar, Saar, Saaar, please Saaar, next week flight Saar...
"SCRAM, so many people waiting no!? Go wait for some time!
....tick, tock.... 10 mins later I linger persistently by the door and he looks over and says, "Ok, go get this passport copy notarized and come back. Don't ask me where, you go find it.
Went out thinking it was an eyewash but decided to catch an auto and give it a shot - 5 mins around the corner was a civil high court with advocates sitting outside - he stamped it for 50 bucks without seeing what paper it was. Got back to the institute, gave the paper and then he gave a white form which needs to be filled up - then go around the corner with it and Rs. 400 - paid the cashier and got the receipt.
Then you need to take the receipt back to the same guy and he will give you a yellow card, which will have a number written on it.
You will also need to fill in your name and passport on the front page as well as inside on the columns with your date of birth and signature.
Then stand in the queue where the doctors are giving the shots.
They will call out and take passports+cards of people, 10 at a time (like yellow card numbers 20-30, 50-60, etc as the vial allows for 10 shots to be given and cannot be given in smaller multiples as she mixes a couple of vials together to make the concoction and needs to use the mix immediately)
Shot was not at all painful and the procedure was quick.
They will stamp and sign the card with the date and give back your original passport if you gave it or keep the notarized copy of your passport if you only submitted that as in my case.

    PHEW!:
So all in all wasn't too bad or difficult. They were actually reasonably organized and the reason the register guy was kinda rude in the beginning was otherwise people were just flocking around his table not maintaining a queue or anything.
When he finally did issue me the first white sheet to register, I said thanks for helping and he said "Yes of course we will help but you'll have to understand that we will do it step by step and he needed to give priority to people who's names were already in his register book first or it would cause commotion (which I thought was commendable)
Apparently the best way to ensure you definitely get your shot is to go there on Monday morning around 9-930 to wait for the guy to show up by 10, with your original passport and a HARD copy of your ticket (there was a guy there who was sent away cos he kept trying to show the soft copy of his ticket on the phone and it was apparently unacceptable)
Then ensure he is writing your name in his register as this is the most key thing.
They ask for the flight ticket to see if you are flying soon and usually if you are flying much later they may ask you to come back later as well. It apparently takes 10 days for the vaccine to be effective so you need to take the shot at least 10 days before you leave (although there were quite a number of people who were leaving in just 7-9 days - dont know if there's were bogus tickets or what)
So its done and at least I dont need to worry about it for the next 10 years cos its valid that long. Just dont lose the card.
Oh and I did meet someone who had lost his card and was trying to take the vaccine again but I overheard the guy say to come back another day when they were free to give his details in some form and they would look it up (god knows how in that old ledger) and they would issue a duplicate yellow card if they found his records were ok.

    DONE! ALL THE BEST!

  59. It was a very swift and smooth incident. Kudos to the staff there. Self reached there by 10:00 am and by 11:00 am was out of there. Did my appointment booking by phone on monday and was surprised to see up to 30 people there so no issue on not getting a shot. they did provide us with syringe and card for no extra cost. The new fees are INR 400.00 for which they do give a reciept. All in all a good job by the staff there.

If this is true can you send only the drug if I pay you online ? and then get the shot here from PHI. Thanks .

    3. My advice would be to get the vaccine from PHI itself, since the procedure (as far as I understand) would remain essentially similar in both situations.
We do not ship the vaccine since it is temperature sensitive, and a prescription drug. We do accept online bank payment, however the vaccine needs to be taken at our clinic in Mumbai, Delhi or Chandigarh.

  85. I was lucky as they picked up when I called. Though it was on Tuesday noon and the person said they already have the quota of 100 filled, I dropped company name AMAZON and that we are more than one person - that helped. He said come tomorrow, I will adjust.

So we happily went over at 12:15pm and waited till the 100th person in the list left. Then some other people turned up and we had 10 people present. So he opened 11th vial. The vaccine was administered soon and the process was very quick.

My friend turned up late as his cab dropped him far off. Now he was outside the 110 people, so the person said he will manage private vaccine. This means he had to pay 1500 bucks instead of 400 for the normal route.

We finished everything pretty fast and left by 1pm.

    1. I would be happy if someone who has visited the Bangalore center can respond to this,
I believe that many Govt Centers do insist on this (superfluous) regulation though I am not sure about the Bengaluru center,

    1. No,
Generally speaking, the govt centers require the original passport for vaccination,
Private centers, on the other hand, can do with the Xerox copy of the passport,

  88. We'll be going to Kenya in 2 months and I'm hoping to get the YF and OPV vaccines in the next 2 weeks at the Bangalore PHI.

    1. Will they deny us the vaccines because our trip is still 2-1/2 months away?
    2. Will we both have to go on Monday to make the appointment or can I go with both passports to set the appointment for my husband and I?
    3. Please confirm I can get both YF and OPV at the same time?
    4. I haven't applied for the visa yet, is that mandatory to bring as well? Or just the flight information is required?
    5. Any recent experience with the Bangalore PHI indicating better or worse experience?

    1. Here are the answers to your questions.
      1. NO, The certificate is valid for 10 years. So you can take it today and travel after 9 YEARS, it still remains valid !
      2. I am not sure, being a govt set up I would err on the side of caution and suggest that both of you go...
      3. Generally speaking Yes, however again I am not 100 % certain. We do both the vaccines simultaneously.
      4. Not sure, some centers require original visa.
      5. I hope that someone can post their experience with Bangalore PHI on the comment section soon. You do it after you have gone their :)

  89. Hi This blog has been very helpful. I am travelling mid August and called the PHI today to book an appointment. However, they said that I need to come 10 days priorly only for both OPV & YF. I am a bit confused as from what I have heard, getting dates for vaccination is a bit difficult. Also, what Makemytrip suggests is this-

"Yellow fever vaccination taken at least 10 days before departure date mandatory for emigration clearance"
"Oral Polio vaccination taken at least 4 weeks and not more than one year before departure date mandatory for emigration clearance"

As per this, I thought, I could take it right away as well. Keeping it to the last moment in fact may not be the wisest thing to do. Please advice, these guys aren't budging!

    1. I completely agree with you.
You should be able to take the vaccine even 1 year before the date of travel.
There is no rule that says that you have to come EXACTLY 10 days before.
Please talk to them strictly, and suggest that you will put in an RTI/ report them to their superiors.
This should do the trick :)
      All the best.

  91. I had a surprisingly good experience at the PHI today where i had my YF vaccine administered . I had phoned up and confirmed the date. They had asked me to bring my passport and a copy of my flight tickets. However when i landed up there at 11.30 am , a bit late due to traffic conditions, I was surprised that no one asked about appointments. It seemed like walk ins were welcome. Quite a few were walk ins . They just gave out a from, we filled it up, paid the cash in the adjacent room and then a third room for submitting the reciept and scrutiny of the passport. They issue a token number and then , we wait to be called in. We were out in 20 minutes. No one even asked for my flight ticket . Not only was it efficiently done, everyone , right from the watchman , attending to car parking to the attendents and the staff inside, were very polite and helpful. All in all, a breeze.

    1. I believe that most govt centers ask for the Visa & Flight ticket details.
TravelSafe Clinic requires only the details of your passport, however we are only located in Chandigarh and Delhi.

  93. Hi All,
I have got my yellow fever vaccination done on 05/Oct/2016 at public health institute, bangalore. I would like to post my experience here, which I think will be helpful for many who plans for one. The vaccination is done only on Wednesdays, or the next working day in case of public holidays. Please book your appointment at least a day before to avoid long waiting time. They might keep you at waiting list, but it is as good as an appointment. Once you are at the center you may peacefully wait for your turn, the officer will call you at the time slot given to you during booking. You will be then given with a form followed by payment (Rs 400) instructions. The center has capacity for 150 vaccines a day, which is done in a batch of 10s. One could be a little disturbed by the incomplete information and sense of uncertainty imposed during booking and administration, but process is efficient and simple.

      - can i Get the vaccine and certification from renowned hospitals (i.e., SAKRA) instead of PHI?
      - second, I'm travelling in Dec 22nd & unfortunately I alreday send my original passport to mumbai agency. So, will passport xerox copy would suffice at PHI, Bangalore?
      - Any contact number of PHI, bangalore, other than mentioned in website? cos, no one is lifting the phone.

    1. All CIVIL SURGEONS in the country are authorized to appoint someone to administer the Polio Drops. Many a times the Yellow Fever Center also provides the Polio drops, however I am not sure if this is true for the Bangalore Yellow Fever Center.
Please find out and post the information about the same in this forum to benefit others.

This information is provided by Travelsafe clinic mohali for patient education.
We are not affiliated to the govt center in bangalore in anyways.
If you have any problems, you can certainly visit our center in Delhi/ Chanidgarh, and get the vaccination done with just a copy of your passport.

  97. Hi... Is YFV mandatory for kid less than 1 year, to be specific 10 months old.?
If we want to get YFV done for our kid, where can we get it done?
In Bangalore, public hospital, they are saying, we cant vaccinate kid less than 1 year.
In Private hospital, they are ready to vaccinate, but not giving any certificate.

    1. Hi,
A 10 month old kid may do without the vaccination for Yellow Fever,
We can easily vaccinate kids even above 6 months, however the immigration generally accepts unvaccinated kids up to 1 year age.
The govt policies are least understood by anyone, however you can safely travel with a 10 month old without vaccination.
If he turns 1 year before you return, please get the vaccination done in the country you are visiting.
For certification + vaccination, you can visit our clinics in Delhi or Chandigarh,
      warm regards
