Unfortunately, due to bureaucratic red tape and governmental apathy and indifference, most of these centers have restricted working hours, need for prior appointment and rude staff whose attitude leaves a lot to be desired.
Hence, many enterprising private doctors have been providing this vaccination to people needing the yellow fever vaccine. This vaccine is called STAMARIL (manufactured by Sanofi Aventis at France) and imported under license of Drug Controller Authority of India.
When provided along with the WHO International Certificate of Vaccination, the vaccination is internationally accepted with a validity of 10 years.

All information provided by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD, Charak Clinics. Stamaril, Yellow Fever Vaccine is available at Charak Clinics, Chandigarh, North India for all travelers to Endemic Countries in Africa / Central & South America with WHO certificate of vaccination valid for 10 years. 1. I am sorry to hear about your bad experience, but this is unfortunately true for many government services in our country.
The good news is that you can get the vaccine in a very welcoming and comfortable environs of Charak clinics, at Chandigarh, on a daily basis (except Sundays).
Just let us know if you still need the vaccine.

    3. Well, I am not aware of any clinic doing this in an authorized way in Mumbai, except for the government centers.
We at TravelSafe Clinic are looking to expand our operations and Mumbai appears a very likely choice, so keep watching our blog for more information :)
In the meanwhile, you can consider flying to Delhi for the vaccination at our NOIDA center, or to Chandigarh, both well connected with mumbai.

    1. Dear Courtney,
This remains an unfortunate fact of life in India (& many developing countries)..
The government employees think that they are doing an enormous favor by doing their job.
I am not aware of private centers in Delhi, but I am certainly available on all weekdays in Chandigarh, which is a well connected & comfortable 3 hour train journey, or a 30 minutes flight from the Capital.
If you want to come here, please let me know, we will do the vaccination within minutes, and you can be on your way back ASAP,

  3. I had to spend time and driving to find the exact location of vaccination centre.Like to share it with others who are looking for Yellow fever vaccination at APHO (Airport Health Organisation)New Delhi, on Tuesday and Thursday,
    To locate it,
From national highway or From Gurgaon, drive towards IG International Airport terminal 3(For ease of understanding please note that this is road on other side of flyover opposite to Raddison hotel). As you drive towards terminal 3, you will find on left the Toll booths, contnue to drive and take a U-turn (return side), as you drive slowly towards entry to NH Flyover, just before the entry on left hand side, there is board of vaccination center and a high building with name board of APHO, the road on left is not the proper Tar Road but leads you to vaccination center. They ask you to come for registration between 10 AM and 12 PM and for vaccination at 2PM.Hope, this helps.

Yesterdar, I along with my family and friends went for yellow fever vaccination. For being vegetarian they did egg allergy test for all of us before vaccination. One friend from our group found allergic to egg in that test and denied for yellow fever vaccination. We have already booked everything to travel to Kenya and South Africa.
PLEASE ADVICE ME TO OVER COME THIS SITUATION.

    1. Doing egg allergy testing is NOT recommended for vegetarians routinely, and I would not have done it.
Here is my post that discusses the same issue,
      http://yellowfevervaccine.blogspot.in/2011/08/can-people-with-egg-allergy-take-yellow.html
Now given that the test has been done, and the person found ? allergic, there are two options,
      1. He can ask the doctor who has done the test to give a certificate saying that the person is allergic to egg and hence the vaccination is not being given,
      2. He can take the vaccination after discussing this with the doctor, in a hospital based setting.
I would recommend that the first option is easier to do, and you can ask carry the original allergy testing report and the doctor's certificate during immigration.

Is it necessary to have vaccination again to get a new certificate? Does it have any side effects? or can i have certificate issued in chennai by declaring about my last vaccination? Please Reply. Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
  13. You would probably have to take the vaccination again, as no other center has the authority to issue a Duplicate Certificate. If you know the exact date, or have a photocopy, you could try requesting the RML hospital, but that may prove difficult.
There is unlikely to be any side-effect of taking an extra dose.

  18. Hello, I am travelling from UK but have a Kenyan Passport. I havent been to Kenya for the past 5 years since i came here. I am travelling end of this month, and i came to know that yellow fever vaccination is a necessecity? If i dont have it, will i be refused entry into India?

I dont want to take the vaccine as it has non veg element in it, and am not prepared to let my cultural values down and vest those elements in my blood stream.

Please let me know soon mr Gupta.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I appreciate your concerns regarding vegetarianism.
For starters, if you are flying in straight from UK, you should NOT need the YF vaccine.
However, I am surprised that you were not asked to take the vaccine when you flew out of Kenya 5 years ago.
Coming to your point regarding vegetarianism,
Well, they don't actually contain meat and egg as an actual ingredient, however animals and their products are involved in the production of vaccines, for example many vaccines are cultured in fertilized chicken eggs. Viral vaccines must be grown in cells. Eggs are commonly used, but some viruses must be grown in human cells. Those cells are grown in media supplemented with bovine serum. A porcine enzyme is also used.
But this should not prevent you from having any required vaccines; being a vegetarian or vegan is about reasonably minimizing your contribution to animal suffering. Refusing necessary medication/vaccines isn't reasonable. Denying youself life potentially life saving vaccines is neither resonable nor practical.
The amounts that may theoretically enter your body are so minute that you are likely to not even be affected even if you have a mild to moderate allergy to egg/ non veg foods. You are much more likely to ingest larger quantities when eating outside - even with veg foods.
So my take is that take the vaccines as & when needed, and remain vegetarian for life - it's healthier that way :)

      Delete
  19. Thankyou Dr Gupta for your very prompt reply. Is there any autority in India delaing with the vaccine i can call and follow up to confirm your statement.

'For starters, if you are flying in straight from UK, you should NOT need the YF vaccine.'

I thought so too because i have been here in UK since 2006 and never have travelled back to Kenya or any other country listed under the yellow fever endemic areas.

Even then, I also have recently been naturalised as a British Citizen, only that i donot have a passport yet. So technically i am semi-British now hence you are right about travel from Uk. But its really best for me to find out for sure, as i know how people are on Indian Airports, they see a foreigner and some officers do all possible to get some money out of them...shame but a fact.

I have had all other required travel vaccines long before i had such a concern as in my first post.

    Thankyou

  20. The 'authorities' would be the Govt of India, and I do believe that it would be extremely difficult to find someone to actually answer that query .... PLUS no guarantee that the immigration people would actually take your word for it....
I completely agree with the "fleecing the foreigner part" unfortunate but true.
My practical advise would be to take the vaccine if you are planning to visit Africa/ South America in the near future, so that you do not remain tense all the way from UK to India :) , PLUS it remains valid for 10 years.
Finally, most of the viral vaccines do have some component of animal protein so your travel vaccines have already provided you with some animal protein in your body .....

    ReplyDelete
  21. To be honest, the organization has done you a disfavor here. They are most likely NOT authorized to give the vaccine, since they need to issue a WHO International Certificate of Vaccination which is the accepted document for YF vaccination.
So the answer to your question is NO this document and 'certificate' is not likely to be valid.
You are likely to require the vaccine again, since no govt organization will issue a duplicate card on the basis of this vaccination.
There are unlikely to be any side-effects of the same.
    Regards
    Dr Gupta
PS: I know this is a bit far, but if you could make it to Chandigarh, we could try to assist ....

  24. Hello Doc.

I read your blog and comments. It's good that I finally gathered the right info about this yellow fever thing.

Request you to please clarify a query of mine.

How soon can I travel to Gaborone, Botswana after getting yellow fever vaccine provided that the certificate becomes valid after 10 days and I'll be flying through Nairobi, Kenya?

    Thanks

    1. Thanks, for the kind words.
I am not sure I understand the question fully, but you can fly to any place that is endemic for Yellow Fever, preferably 10 days after taking the vaccination to avoid any trouble at Immigration.
The NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Corporation) government website states that taking the vaccination even a week before travel is acceptable, but I would like to keep the exact margin of safety.
So in short, you should preferably land in another country 10 days after getting the vaccine,
      Regards

    2. Thanks for the reply, actually I'm required to travel to Botswana day after tomorrow but I still haven't got the yellow fever vaccine. I'm planning to get it tomorrow. That's why I asked how soon will travel be possible.

What do you suggest in this case? Is it like that I'll be quarantined for 6 days (as the rule says), if I show them the certificate which I've just got the day before?

    4. Ok,
      Thanks for the clarification.
You can get the vaccination done as soon as feasible.
You 'may' get stuck at Immigration, though in our experience this is quite rare.
Generally speaking, if you have the certificate, and are coming back to India after a minimum of 10 days after vaccination, you are not likely to face a problem.
Of course, this does not mean that you cannot be singled out by Immigration, or put in quarantine for 6 days,
I hope that I have made it clear?
Finally, do remember that you will not be protected against Yellow Fever disease, till at least 10 days after you have taken the vaccination,

I went to B J Medical College / Deptt of Preventive & Social Medicine, and met the HOD.They are still in the process of obtaining approvals and then will follow the set-up and are looking at getting their personnel trained suitably. All this , knowing bureaucratic methods, will take a few months if not a year. HOD himself, seemingly, had very little clue about the YF.
Let no one go to a wrong place and waste time. Pune/Maharashtra people should go to either Port Health Centre at Ballard Estate,Fort OR A/Port Health Centre. Besides, these places cater to only limited number of people in a day. Be there early and register to avoid delays/disappointments. Timing at Fort 10.00am to 1.00 pm Mon-Friday. I plan to travel to Congo in the first week of December and need to get the Yellow fever vaccination. I have tried to locate a centre here in jodhpur(my home town) in rajasthan but I dont think there is any centre here. So, I guess the nearest available centre would be Delhi/Noida for me. But I have a few queries:
Do I need to have a valid visa and air tickets with me in order to get a vaccine ?
Do I need to make a prior booking for the vaccine before comeing to Delhi ?
Also, is it a necessity that the vaccinaton be done atleast 10 days before the travel date?

    Thanks in advance.

    3. Hi,
Breastfeeding is a precaution to yellow fever vaccination, and women should be cautioned to avoid this vaccination while breastfeeding. Since risk exists and there are many gaps in knowledge, breastfeeding mothers should be discouraged from traveling to yellow fever–endemic areas. However, if travel to a yellow fever–endemic area cannot be avoided or postponed, then the mother should be vaccinated.

    1. Nope,
The information that you got online is not correct.
The charges are fixed by the government and are approximately Rs. 300/- to Rs. 500/- for most government centers.
It is NOT variable depending on the number of people being vaccinated on a particular day. The government vaccine vial is a multi-dose vial containing 10 doses, so 10 people (at most) can be given the vaccination using one vial. They are normally called in batches of 10, and different government centers have varying policies regarding maximum number of people that can be vaccinated on a given day. Everyone is charged the same amount.

    1. You would need to contact the vaccinating center with a photocopy, and request them for the same.
If this does not work, you could optionally consider taking another dose, since an extra dose after more than 1 month is safe,

    1. We are authorized by the vaccine manufacturers who have taken permission from WHO & GOI for selling the vaccine in India
We have been providing the vaccine from 2005, and have not faced any problems yet.
Copies of certificates can be seen at the certificate section
